William W. Macy

Civil War Veteran
William enlisted in the Union Army as a Sergeant in Co. C, 19th IN Inf., on July 29, 1861. His regiment was part of the famed "Iron Brigade" of the West, or "Black Hats Brigade". On Marcy 1, 1863 he was promoted to a full 1st Lt. He transferred out of Co. C, 19th IN Inf. and into Co. I, 20th Inf. IN on October 18, 1864. On this day he was promoted to Full Capt. Macy saw many battles during the war including Battle Cedar Mountain on August 9, 1862, skirmishes against Stonewall Jackson along Rappahannock , and in Gainsville, the second Bull Run, South Mountain and Antietam in which Macy received a slight scalp wound from a mini ball.
From here Capt. Macy fought battles at Fredericksburg from December 12 to 15, 1862. He then fought battles at Fitz Hugh Crossing on April 28, Chancelorsville on May 8, and Gettysburg from July 1 to July 4. On July 3rd as Macy was sleeping, he received a second mini ball to his head, this one more serious than the first. Macy was married to Alice Addington of Randolph County. Alice was a school teacher and daughter of John L. and Sally Addington. Capt. and Mrs. Macy were the parents of one child, Orla A. Macy. The Macy's also raised a nephew of Mrs. Macy, Albert H. Addington. Albert came to live with them in 1878.
