Joseph Hamilton Huston

Born February 14, 1869

Died March 1, 1957

Joseph Hamilton Huston was a well-known, old-time circus man.  He was a remarkable person who had a hand in developing some of the greatest show-business enterprises of his time.  He moved with his family from Anderson to Winchester in 1879. His parents were the proprietors of the Huston Hotel which stood where the Overmyer Mould Company now stands.  When a troupe of wandering show people were stranded at the hotel, Huston, then around 17 or 18, became fascinated by them.  He took his company on the road and helped develop the Gentry Dog and Pony Show, one of the most famous of it's kind.

In 1902 with Hugo Floto, Joseph built the "Floto Circus Beautiful", which later became the Sells Floto Circus.  As a promoter, he led an eventful life.  After his circus experiences, he traveled extensively in the west and made several trips to Mexico with shows.  In Texas he became "Sam" Houston.  He had four 80-foot steel railroad cars to transport equipment on long trips.  He was helped by his daughter, Adonna. Huston passed away on March 1, 1957 in Long Beach California. He was 88 years old.
