Asahel Stone was born June 28, 1817 in Marietta, Ohio, the son of Ezra Stone, who was a carpenter contractor. Asahel would become a well-respected carpenter/contractor. Asahel married Lydia Preston on September 24, 1837, in Hamilton, Ohio. Lydia Preston was born November 25, 1817, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Asahel and Lydia had no children.
Asahel was a carpenter and entrepreneur. He was a State Senator before and after the Civil War. He was instrumental in shifting the railroad to come through Winchester and his own property. He supported the Temperance efforts, publicly and personally. Asahel was Commissary General and State Quarter Master General during the Civil War. He was in charge of the State Bakery, which provided for government run institutions including the military hospitals and prisons, as well as veteran, widow, and orphan homes.


He was the president, a director, and a Stockholder of the Randolph County Bank (1879). He donated forty acres to establish the Fountain Park Cemetery as a public cemetery for citizens of Winchester, Indiana on March 1, 1880. At that time, you would be able to see his burial plot from the master bedroom in the Stone Mansion at the intersection of South Meridian Street and Huntsville Road in Winchester.
Asahel died on February 25, 1891, in Winchester and his will, dated January 31, 1891, notes "of sound mind and failing health". He is buried in Fountain Park Cemetery in Winchester, Indiana. Lydia Stone died September 18, 1892, in Winchester and is buried with Asahel in Fountain Park Cemetery.
