Earl Bowman Marlatt was a twin born May 24, 1892, in Columbus, Indiana into the family of a Methodist Episcopal minister. He graduated from DePauw University. He served in World War I and then graduated from Boston University School of Theology. In 1912, he continued his studies at Harvard and Oxford, England. In 1923, he began teaching at Boston University. From 1945 to 1957 he taught at Southern Methodist University's Perkins School of Theology.
He wrote many hymns and in February of 1926 he wrote on of his best known - "Are Ye Able". He also wrote the words to the DHS fight song. Many of his papers are held at DePauw University and a signed manuscript of his hymn is included in the Bridwell Library Manuscript and Documents Collection.
Earl died at his home in Winchester on June 13, 1976. He is buried on the Brenner Reserve near the fountain, as his sister was Anna Marlatt Brenner. Also in the Brenner Reserve is Dr. Andrew Max Brenner, who was a local physician and was the son of William and Erma May Brenner.
