Capt. James L. Neff

Company H 124th Indiana Volunteer Infantry

Capt. Neff took his regiment into the Atlanta Campaign, conflicts in Franklin and Nashville, TN and fought courageous battles.  But at the Battle of Wise's Fork near Kingston, NC he fell at his post, pierced by a Minnie ball from a rebel riffle.  In an earlier fight he had been struck by a Minnie ball knocking him unconscious but recovered to lead the charge again and his second would proved to be fatal.  He died at the age of 18.  Samuel C. Crane, a private wounded in the same battle that took Capt. Neff's life, penned a poem about Neff.  It can be found on page 322 of the Tucker's History of Randolph County.
